The Australian dollar fell to its lowest level against the US dollar in a week on renewed concerns about an upcoming auction of long term Italian bonds.

At 0700 AEDT the Australian dollar was at 100.88 US cents, down from 101.50 US cents on Wednesday afternoon.

Overnight, the currency fell to 100.72 euro cents, its lowest level since December 22.

The local currency lost ground on renewed concerns about the outcome of Italy's upcoming auction of 10-year-bonds.

The debt-laden eurozone nation raised 9 billion euros ($A11.65 billion) in an overnight auction of short term debt, at half the rate paid at a similar auction in November.

However, investor fears that Thursday night's (Australian time) 10-year bond auction will not be as successful sent European equities markets lower overnight and helped drive the euro currency to a 11-month low against the US dollar.

HiFX senior trader Stuart Ive said the auction of longer term debt was risky, given the potential for the continent's financial crisis to worsen.

"For a bank to actually think `I'm going to go and buy some of that' it's a very big call for them," he said from Auckland.

"We are finishing this year in a situation where Europe is far from resolved."

Mr Ive said the Australian dollar could fall further on Thursday ahead of the Italian bond auction.

"For the remainder of today these markets will remain heavy and the focus will be certainly on (the bond auction) tonight."

The Australian currency reached a record high against the weakened euro currency overnight, hitting a peak of 78.30 euro cents.

"That (the euro) is uncharted territory at the moment," Mr Ive said.

Just because one is paranoid, Johan, doesn't mean there's not someone after them :)

I'm sure Osama had many moments of paranoia whilst knowing someone was after him :)

Maybe the secrecy documents should be opened after 5 years and not 50 years, so true accountability can be factored in

Hey, Johan. Kernal has a point. I just hope that he doesn't fall too passionately into a line of thinking that can have consequences of needing anti psychotic medication.

We Plebs, don't get anywhere near the level of transparent knowledge of what's going on. We have a surface web with what appears to be millions of pages, when in reality it's not much more than a few thousand, if that. We don't have access to the web beneath the surface, which makes the surface look like the tip of the iceberg.

We don't know if people seep out more accurate information. Unfortuantely dissimination of the information is always skewed.

I just hope that Kernal uses his passion elsewhere rather dominantly on conspiracy theories. :)
