A new poll shows Prime Minister Julia Gillard is closing the gap on Opposition Leader Tony Abbott as preferred prime minister and Labor is narrowing the coalition's lead.
But Labor's primary vote is languishing at 30 per cent in the latest Nielsen poll and the government would be annihilated if an election was held now.
The poll, published in Fairfax newspapers on Monday, shows Ms Gillard has drawn level with Mr Abbott as preferred prime minister for the first time since June, and Labor is catching up on the two-party preferred vote with the coalition leading 55 to 45 per cent.
In July, the vote stood at 61-39 - so it's a big improvement for the government.
The poll of 1400 people was taken between Thursday and Saturday.
Ms Gillard's approval rating is up six percentage points to 39 per cent since the last poll in October and her disapproval rating is down five points to 57 per cent.
Mr Abbott's approval rating is steady on 41 per cent as his disapproval rating of 54 per cent.
